There Is No Escape (and so...?)
In The Name Of The Rose is a multi-media installation exploring the dissection of combined sensory experiences into individual engagements. By isolating each sense and examining it independently, the work amplifies our sensory perception. Through the brain’s nonlinear editing process, these fragmented experiences are reassembled into a continuous timeline, creating layered and fluid narratives.
This exhibition delves into the intricate relationship between the singular self and the collective self, particularly within the orientalist gaze. It offers both a critique and an appreciation of the aesthetics presented in The Scent of Green Papaya (1993) and The Painted Veil (2006), examining the shifts between dominance and submission in these contexts.
The installation weaves together a multi-sensory experience, centered on the artist's given name, 薇 ("rose" in Chinese). It incorporates silent moving-image works, an audio piece, a tactile letter, and the scent of a decaying rose, inviting audiences into a rich narrative interplay that spans sight, sound, touch, and smell.
