Within the realms of Zhiguai, the boundaries between life and death, the divine and the earthly, and dreams and reality are blurred and intermingled. The idea of Guaiyi is encapsulated by the Chinese terms guai (“怪”), yi (“异”), and qi (“奇”), which represent various shades of strangeness—ranging from the unusual and extraordinary to the bizarre and unsettling. Guaiyi expands the boundaries of eroticism, disregarding societal constraints on sexuality. It revolves around the violation and blurring of set boundaries.i.
